Historically fly tying hackle has been available by local farm birds, imported Indian pelts and today what is known as Privately Bred Genetic Hackle.

Almost all genetic hackle breeders today have some remnant of Harry Darbee, Andy Miner and a handful of other less known early Genetic Hackle Breeders in their flocks.

Without the early groundwork and passion of these genetic hackle pioneers more than likely the quality of any genetic hackle flock would not be were it is today, without their generosity and contributions.

The International Hackle Growers Federation's (IHGF) vision is to unite the global hackle growers out of secrecy and isolation for several reasons.

  • Increase the knowledge, on how to raise genetic hackle chickens, more can be gained by hackle growers by being open about breeding and production methods.

  • A central location of all the hackle growers, a place where buyers of your products can find you.

  • A place to exchange information, a great way to communicate with like minded individuals to further the development of Genetic Hackle.

  • Stock exchange, if you choose to do so, genetics is everything to a breeder.

I know first hand, without the help of well known breeders I personally could never of accomplished any breeding projects and succeeded.

Here is an interesting side note.
Who would of known such a tiny niche industry that normally services the fly fishing industry would of been over run by the fashion industry for demand of hackle products which predominately only serviced fly fishermen.

A very interesting Story by Steven B. Schweitzer has highlighted a blue ocean opportunity for both suppliers of hackle and resellers.
